Homemade bird feeders come in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and colors. They are also made from a wide range of materials.
While all bird feeders will accomplish the same goal, many people want to build feeders that will feed the birds and look good doing it.
As a child I built homemade bird feeders out of half gallon milk jugs, 2 liter soda bottles, and a wide assortment of other recycled materials.
I filled these up with sunflower seeds and sure enough, I had birds in my parents yard.
These days however, I’m not comfortable putting up these homemade bird feeders in my yard. I decided to learn how to build a bird feeder for a couple of reasons.
For starters, they look wretchedly ugly.
Also, they do not provide as much safety for the birds as I would like.
A better built bird house, (say that 5 times fast, haha!), provides my birds with a place to get seeds that I can stare at for hours. I watch them move back and forth between my bird bath and my bird feeders and it always brightens my day.
In addition to this, the birds don’t have to worry about rats, squirrels, and other animals chewing through their bird houses.
This is because all of my homemade bird houses are now made out of wood. I used Ted’s woodworking plans and have built a few of the designs built in there. These designs were easy to build and have really livened the yard up.
In addition to the beautiful homemade bird feeders that I’ve been able to build, I’ve also used the plans to build an owl house. While many people think that they cannot put an owl house up for fear of losing their birds, this simply is not true.
It is true that some owls will scare away birds, but not all owl species will bother with them. Also, owls hunt at night and generally sleep during the day.
I’ve had days where I’ve been able to watch the birds play in the yard while watching the owl sleep in another area of the yard.
Bird nesting boxes are also included in Ted’s plans, but I have not gotten around to building any of these at the moment. During this time of year the birds have already nested anyway so the nests would probably only be taken by other wild life.
Homemade Bird Feeders That Work
Whether you decide to build other things from Ted’s Woodworking plans or not, the bird house plans you will find in there are definitely worth taking a look at. With them, it is very easy to learn just how to make a bird feeder that will last for years to come.
